Can, Could, Be Able To, May — Yetenek ve İzin (-ebilmek)
Bu modal fiiller yetenek, imkân, izin ve rica bildirir; Türkçedeki '-ebilmek' (yüzebilirim, gelebilir miyim?) ekinin karşılığıdır. 'Can' şimdiki yetenek ve izin, 'could' geçmiş yetenek ve kibar rica, 'be able to' diğer zamanlar, 'may' ise resmî izin için kullanılır.

Geçmişteki genel yetenek (could)
When I was five, I could already read.
Geçmişte belli bir durumda başarmak (was able to / managed to)

İki modal (will + can) yan yana gelemez; 'be able to' kullanılır.

Modal fiillerden sonra 'to' gelmez.

Geçmişte belli bir durumda başarılan tek bir eylem için 'could' yerine 'was able to / managed to' kullanılır.

Konuşmada nasıl kullanılır?
- Kibarlık sırası: 'Can I...?' (samimi) → 'Could I...?' (kibar) → 'May I...?' (resmî). Restoranda 'Could I have the menu, please?' en güvenli seçimdir.
- 'Can' olumlu cümlede zayıf okunur /kən/, olumsuzu 'can't' ise güçlü okunur /kɑːnt/ veya /kænt/. Fark vurgudadır.
- Ricaya doğal cevaplar: 'Sure!', 'Of course.', 'No problem.', 'Go ahead.' Reddetmek için: 'I'm afraid I can't.'
- 'Can' gelecek ve perfect zamanlarda kullanılamaz; 'will be able to', 'have been able to' kullanın.
